I finally got a chance to watch it today! The trailers definitely weren't clear with what the movie was about so I went in with no overall expectations. The one thing I specifically expected was to like Teyana's character (Perfidia) BUT she turned out to be one of the characters I disliked the most LOL Bob (Ghetto Pat) was endearing because of his determination to be present for his daughter. I looked at his alcohol and drug abuse as coping mechanisms for the grief and loss attached to losing Perfidia and no longer doing what he loved. I could talk all day about each character because I enjoyed how they showed up. I was excited to see Wood Harris in the cast, too!
There were also some things I observed (such as the interracial relationships, the shifts in Perfidia and Pat once they became parents, Perfidia's family) that immediately caught my attention. I wasn't aware that PTA is married to Maya Rudolph, but learning that from your post makes me view the interracial relationships differently. It makes me think that they were inserted to be reflective of PTA's relationship and any relationships he's witnessed around him.
It was highly entertaining and Leo's performance made me feel the exact same way I did when I watched him in The Departed, Shutter Island, and Inception. I'd for sure watch it again.
